Laser hair removal is a fast, painless, and highly effective way to remove unsightly hair growth and prevent it from growing back. Common areas for treatment include the upper lip, underarms, bikini area, legs and arms – although the treatment can be applied to other parts of the body.
The Procedure
Laser hair removal treatment works on the principle of selective photothermolysis. During the procedure, Dr. Lanfranchi uses a hand-held laser instrument to target the upper skin layers. The laser transfers energy onto the hair, but is absorbed only by the melanin pigments. Light energy is converted into heat and emitted, causing damage to cell structures around the hair. The damaged cells are left unable to regenerate, so hair does not grow again. The skin cells, however, are unharmed by the laser.
Laser treatment is most effective on actively growing follicles. Since hairs are at different phases of growth at any given time, it may take several sessions before hair is completely removed. The number of treatments needed depends on the area of the body to be treated, skin color, coarseness of hair, and gender. Some patients may need touch-up sessions, especially for large areas, after the initial set of 3-8 treatments.
Side Effects
Although laser hair removal is a relatively safe procedure, it is possible to experience some temporary side effects. The skin on treated area may turn slightly pink, and you may feel a little sunburned for a couple of days.
